Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able to discuss the issues involved in language study with a considerable degree of critical sophistication, to apply concepts from such study to other pursuits involving language, and to converse with fellow students about texts and issues related to the subject matter of the course.
Topical Outline
The choice and sequence of topics will vary from instructor to instructor and semester to semester. Sample topics include > English words and word formation > computer-aided analysis of English > new theoretical approaches to English language > in-depth study of regional and social usage/issues of English Periodically during the semester, students will perform a number of graded tasks, including some combination of tests and out-of-class papers. In-class exams and the final exam will require essays as well as objective questions and problems. Substantial out-of-class writing will be required, including at least one short paper (c. 5 pages), and a prospectus (c. 3-5 pages) that proposes an idea for a major paper due at the end of the term (c. 20 pages).
