Systems Theory and Couple and Family Therapy Theory
Course Description
Investigation of the foundations and critical epistemological issues of MFT, including the historical development of the Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) relational/systemic philosophy, the theoretical and empirical foundations of relational intervention, and the biopsychosocial framework. Major models of early couple and family therapy such as Bowenian, Strategic, Structural, and Contextual are explored.

Students will demonstrate Couple & Family Therapy (CFT) relational/systemic philosophy through case conceptualization using the biopsychosocial framework, early relational theories, and therapies.
Students will demonstrate foundations and critical epistemological issues of CFT.
Students will demonstrate clinical practice skills using the theoretical and empirical foundations of relational intervention.
Students will critically evaluate early family therapy theories and techniques with respect to different family forms, culture, ethnicity, gender, and presenting problem.
Students will identify the ways culture, gender, and ethnicity influence families and apply appropriate interventions.
