Service Learning in Secondary English Education


Course Description

Through the service-learning model this course invites students to explore the historical, political, economic, and social factors that influence secondary English education, how American secondary schools operate, and how teachers function.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will engage with a reading list and additional tasks associated with those readings.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will investigate historical, political, economic, and social influences on literacy education.
  • Students will explore secondary schooling policies and standards.
  • Students will conduct inquiries on issues relevant to secondary English education: (e.g., classroom discourse, culturally relevant teaching, classroom-based assessment, adolescent literacy, teacher learning and collaboration, teaching with technology).
  • Students will gain hands-on experience working effectively with students in the secondary English education setting.
  • Students will reflect on their experiences in teaching/tutoring these students.
