Course Description

Through study of case material, students learn to integrate laboratory test results into an accurate diagnosis. Appropriate treatment and prevention plans will be formulated.

Course Objectives

1. The student will formulate an adequate rule-out list for sets of clinical signs and necropsy findings. 2. The student will select samples to be taken and tests to be performed to support or refute items on the rule-out list. 3. The student will select additional case history information necessary in order to make a diagnosis. 4. The student will identify and interpret lesions in slides of tissues from clinical cases. 5. The student will interpret the results of all avian diagnostic serological techniques in current use. 6. The student will interpret the significance of the isolation of specific avian viral and bacterial pathogens. 7. The student will interpret and apply the results of antimicrobial sensitivity testing. 8. The student should record the FDA approved feed additives, their dosages, withdrawals, and use limitations in each appropriate case. 9. The student will state or list the specific vaccines available for each disease. Vaccine manufacturer, route of application, approvals, antigenicity, and in the case of live vaccines, relative virulence must be included. 10. The student will state or list the approximate antibody level that should be induced by the use of each type of vaccine. 11. The student will design a vaccination program to prevent a given disease in a given set of management circumstances. 12. The student will state or list all currently used anti-protozoal drugs in poultry. This includes dosages, withdrawals, toxicities, resistance, and route of administration. 13. The student will state or list all specific treatments for the infectious diseases of poultry. 14. The student will indicate which diseases are reportable and to whom they should be reported. 15. The student will select or list the specific treatments for external and gastrointestinal parasites of domestic poultry.


Topical Outline

Study of diagnostic laboratory cases is used to give detailed understanding of disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Students use knowledge gained from previous courses in pathology, microbiology, and avian medicine, in evaluating actual case material in order to arrive at a disease diagnosis and an appropriate regimen for prevention and treatment. Interpretation of serology, histopathology, and viral and bacterial isolation is stressed.
