Course Description
Necropsy procedures applied to diagnosis of avian diseases. Use of necropsy case material to correlate function with structure; appropriate therapeutic and prophylactic measures are discussed and recommendations for clients determined. Problem-oriented medical records maintained for discussion and audit.

Course Objectives
1. Develop proficiency in obtaining information from the client and in recognizing clinical signs in live birds submitted to a diagnostic laboratory. 2. Develop proficiency in the techniques of avian necropsy and the application of the techniques in a diagnostic laboratory. 3. Develop proficiency in the recognition and description of gross lesions encountered in the various avian species. 4. Develop the ability to properly select specimens for additional supportive diagnostic tests. 5. Develop experience in the correlation of flock history, clinical signs, and gross lesions with specific diseases or disease processes. 6. Develop the ability to maintain brief, but accurate records for future use. 7. Develop ability to utilize all available information to arrive at a final diagnosis and prescribe appropriate courses of prevention and/or therapy.
Topical Outline
Variable based on case material available. 1. Obtain a history from the person submitting the case. 2. Obtain any necessary samples (i.e. serum, whole blood) which might be useful in providing additional information. 3. Perform, using standard, acceptable techniques, a necropsy on the specimen submitted. If necessary euthanize using appropriate methods. 4. Correlate anatomical structure with function and dysfunction. 5. Describe gross lesions found. 6. Select appropriate tissues, by system, for bacteriological, virological, mycotic, and/or histopathological evaluations to diagnose disease or dysfunction. 7. Correlate, with the clinician, the results obtained (history, clinical signs, gross necropsy findings, and results of additional laboratory work). 8. Make a differential disease diagnosis. 9. Make a definitive diagnosis. 10.Prescribe a course of prevention and/or therapy. 11.Maintain, using a modified problem-oriented medical record approach, all necessary data so that appropriate evaluation of student progress can be made.
