Course Objectives
This course is designed to provide a foundation in spoken and written Yoruba. The development of oral/aural skills will be the principal focus, with the ultimate purpose of laying a foundation for in-depth study of the written language and its grammar. There will be numerous exercises, readings and video shows to expose the students to the Yoruba language and culture. A minimum of one hour per week in the language lab is required.

Week 1/2/3: Greetings, introduction to the sounds and orthography, common nouns, yes/no questions Week 4: More nouns, tani questions, conjunctions, Negations: Kó and kò Week 5: Verbs and pronouns. Position, location, nibo? Week 6: Other subject pronouns. More Negation. Telling time Week 7: Numbers 1-20, cardinals and ordinals. Imperatives Week 8: The verb fun, object pronouns. Possessives Week 9: The future, periods; review and midterm Week 10: Having a guest. 'Which?' questions, adjectives and adjectival verbs Week 11: Pronominal Possessives, past time Week 12: nigbati, lehinti Week 13: Visiting, ordering in a restaurant Week 14: Buying in the market Week 15/16: The habitual.
