Course Objectives
This course is designed to instruct students who intend to travel to Nigeria for study or research using authentic language materials or develop their oral and written proficiency to an advanced level. Additional knowledge of Nigeria and Yoruba speaking West Africa will also be provided through the study of the geography, politics and economic structures of the region. A large part of the class will be devoted to reading texts written in the Yoruba of day-to-day interaction in Nigeria.
Topical Outline
This course is designed to instruct students who intend to travel to Nigeria for study or research using authentic language materials or develop their oral and written proficiency. The topical focus of the course will include (but not limited to) the following: - The Yoruba World view - The Yoruba language, culture, and society - Yoruba online and development of Yoruba learning materials - Continued authentic readings, summarization and translation with varying level of difficulty - Overview of Yoruba language structure and grammar - Story telling, proverbs and wise sayings, idioms, etc. - Cultural presentations and discussions - Nigerian society and West Africa advanced level. Additional knowledge of Nigeria and Yoruba speaking West Africa will also be provided through the study of the geography, politics and economic structures of the region.
