Physiological Basis of Drug Action

Course Description

Course is designed to help understand the key physiological processes that form the groundwork for pharmacotherapy. Course will cover specific physiological mechanisms, the modification of which constitutes the foundation of therapeutic interventions. The course will discuss aspects of physiology that are altered by drug action.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to submit an individual report on a selected topic which will be graded on a pass/fail basis. In addition to the report, graduate credit for the course requires that the quality of the presentations and written exam material, will be of a higher quality than at the undergraduate level.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will explain the physiological basis of pharmacotherapy and drug action grounded in an understanding of physiological mechanisms affecting a drug’s efficacy and toxicity.
  • Students will identify and explain the biological basis of physiological systems and pathways commonly targeted by drugs.
  • Students will predict potential drug side effects based on knowledge of the physiological mechanisms underlying individual systems, such as the cardiovascular, hormonal, and reproductive systems
  • Students will analyze drug-dose relationships and compare mechanisms across drug classes.
  • Students will synthesize knowledge from physiology with the basics of pharmacology and solve applied case-based problems.
  • Students will communicate scientific concepts and demonstrate professional scientific speaking.
