Course Description

This second fundamental drawing course continues to explore perception, the relationship between perception and conception, form as it pertains to representation and abstraction, and the organization of surface through line, shape, light, texture, and space, with special attention to the human figure.

Course Objectives

• Demonstrate increased visual sensitivity and creativity and the effective understanding of the elements and principles of design in representational, abstract, and expressive drawing. • Have developed a proficiency in notional drawing to conceptualize and solve problems. • Demonstrate proficiency using various drawing materials: graphite, conte crayon, variety of charcoal, pastels, pen and ink, erasers, and nontraditional media and surfaces/supports. • Demonstrate an increased awareness and understanding of the role of drawing in modern and contemporary art and society. • Have familiarity with the techniques and rationales for abstraction. • Demonstrate an increased art/design vocabulary and the ability to speak and write critically about their personal graphic works and that of others. • Demonstrate an increased level of craftsmanship and process rigor. • Have an awareness of the pivotal role perception plays in drawing and creativity. • Design and complete an extended series or project.
