Avian Diagnostic Microbiology


Course Description

Intense practical experience in acquisition, handling, and processing of clinical microbiological specimens. Areas covered include processing techniques, culture techniques, media selection, screening methods, interpretation of cultures, traditional and rapid identification methods, antimicrobial sensitivity testing, special recovery and enrichment techniques, hatchery microbiology, HACCP and processing.

Course Objectives

1. To give the student a working knowledge of avian clinical microbiology A. Appreciation of the necropsy and field environments B. Influence of the environment on isolation techniques and antimicrobial sensitivities C. Acquisition and handling of specimens D. Culture techniques for isolation through the use of general, special or selective media E. Antibiotic sensitivity tests - application, expectations and limitations F. Influence of culture conditions on expected recovery G. Recovery of possible contaminants from water, feed, or eggs H. Knowledge of pathogenicity factors of selected organisms I. Knowledge of fungi which cause clinical problems in avian species J. Knowledge of Mycoplasma culture, serological, and molecular techniques 2. To give the students a working knowledge of the day-to- day management of the diagnostic laboratory to include but not limited to: A. Specimen management and workflow B. Data management and reporting C. Laboratory economics
