Elementary Japanese I


Course Description

Emphasis on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will learn grammar, Hiragana and Katakana characters, and about 60 Kanji characters. All lessons include Japanese culture notes. Not open to native speakers.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to apply basic Japanese grammar rules to create accurate sentences. By completing exercises and receiving feedback, they can reflect on mistakes and develop strategies to improve their work.
  • Students will be able to review and correct their own and peers’ errors during activities like peer and group exercises. These collaborative activities foster self-reflection and help build a deeper understanding of grammar and vocabulary.
  • Through cultural explanations in the textbook and supplementary materials, students will be able to connect cultural concepts to their language learning. This approach encourages critical thinking while sparking their interest in Japanese culture.
  • Students will be able to participate in basic conversations in Japanese, demonstrating proper pronunciation and effective use of vocabulary, adverbs, particles, and verb/adjective conjugations in both spoken and written communication.
  • Students will be able to share their daily lives and interests with peers through oral assignments and exams, fostering interaction and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
  • Students will be able to organize their thoughts clearly while incorporating cultural insights through structured writing tasks, including short essays.
  • Students will be able to visual aids and multimedia to enhance presentation, enabling students to effectively express and exchange ideas.
