Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students, having read a substantial amount of material about human languages, language families, and language interrelationships, will be knowledgeable of the major genetic and generic language families of the world and of their geographical distribution, familiar with techniques and procedures for linguistics analysis of a language, and able to discuss basic similarities and differences between languages and language families.
Topical Outline
The choice and sequence of topics will vary from instructor to instructor and from semester to semester. Topics will include works on language and language relation- ships, the development and spread of languages, the geographical distribution of language families, language change and diversity, and the processes involved in the origins and development of pidgins and creoles.
