Course Objectives

This is a short term summer intensive course. It reviews the JPNS 1001 material. Emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will learn grammar, Hiragana and Katakana characters, and about 80 Kanji characters. All lessons include Japanese culture notes. Course also includes character recognition and pronunciation exercise sessions.


Topical Outline

Week 1: Hiragana letters; simple statements, positive and negative; particle ka as a question marker -Hiragana letters; particle wa as topic marker; kore, sore, are -Katakana letters; possessive/attributive particle no; particle yo for emphatic expression Week 2: Katakana letters; numbers 1-10; how to ask and state time -Introduction to Kanji; numbers 11-10,000; kono, sono, ano, dono; particles ga vs. wa; how to ask a price -Noun + past tenses; particle ga as a negative conjunctive; particle ne for a tag question Week 3-Particle mo(also, too); particle to (Noun and Noun) - Present tense of verb (masu-form); particle wo as direct object marker; --masenka for invitation Particle e for a direction of movement; koko, soko, asoko, doko; particle ni for time of action/motion; isshoni (together); particle kara (from time/place) Week 4 Past tense of verb (masu-form); particle de as a marker of the place of action; particle wa for contrast; particle made (until/to time, place) Expressions for presence of animate/inanimate objects; particle kedo (but) Week 5:- I-adjectives; location words - Na-adjectives; location words
