Course Objectives
Painting II emphasizes the role of imagination in art: finding imagery, developing work strategies, discovering sources for personal research and critical thinking. It applies skills learned in Painting I to the investigation of individual interests, aptitudes, and philosophical concerns. In order to take the course, students must already have exhibited basic competence in composition, and color.
Topical Outline
Students work primarily in oil and/or acrylic. Assignments are organized thematically with references to direct observation, photography, film and video, and established iconographies in various arts traditions. Readings in art criticism and theory, as well as exposure to contemporary artists, are addressed in the context of studio art production.
