Course Description
Foundations of second language learning, curriculum, materials design, and methods of teaching non-native speakers of English in grades P-12. This course provides an introduction to curricula, methods, and materials in P-12 classrooms. Students will gain experience tutoring and/or observing English-language learners in P-12 schools.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Activities such as (1) oral reports on research projects or articles dealing with second language learning and teaching, (2) research paper on a topic to be chosen by the professor and the student, or (3) additional instructional units.

Course Objectives
1. To understand the relationship between second language acquisition (SLA) theory and teaching methodology. 2. To gain proficiency in designing and using language teaching methods and materials. 3. To gain hands-on experience teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL). 4. To develop as a reflective practitioner in education. 5. Students will develop the ability to teach English language skills through content instruction. 6. Students will develop the ability to make adjustments in classroom language in order to make it comprehensible to English language learners. 7. Students will develop the ability to evaluate and adapt classroom materials for English language learners. 8. Students will learn to monitor student progress and use appropriate assessment measures and techniques with English language learners.
