Laboratory to be taken in conjunction with Avian Diagnostic Microbiology. The laboratory will apply techniques discussed in lectures.

Course Objectives
1. To give the student a working knowledge of avian clinical microbiology A. See and participate in Necropsy room and field environments B. Observe contamination problems based on collection environment C. Acquire specimens; soft tissues, tracheal specimens, bone marrow D. Streaking for isolation and application observation of bacteria on general, special or selective media E. Perform antibiotic sensitivity tests, QC, and troubleshooting Kirby-Bauer, MIC?s, MBC?s F. Apply aerobic, microaerophilic and anaerobic conditions for optimal recovery of pathogens G. Apply rapid and conventional identification methods and learn when to apply each H. Learn to culture water samples, feed specimens and isolate hatching egg contaminants I. Learn to culture and identify fungi from avian specimens J. Learn to culture and identify Mycoplasma species and perform related serological techniques 2. To give the students a working knowledge of the day-to-day management of the diagnostic laboratory to include but not limited to: A. Manage specimen flow to various labs and do follow-up B. Learn Data management and reporting through use of the lab DBMS C. Learn economical but high likelihood ID methods, and cost effective equipment
