Avian Virus Diseases Laboratory


Course Description

The accompanying lab section to Avian Virus Diseases. Students will perform common diagnostic tests utilized in the avian diagnostic laboratory such as inoculation of chicken embryos and cell cultures for isolation of viruses, molecular virology techniques, quantification of viruses, and serum neutralization.

Course Objectives

1. To familiarize the student with the current techniques used to isolate and identify avian viruses. 2. To perform all steps involved in preparing and maintaining cell cultures of avian origin. 3. To recognize the effect exerted by important avian viruses in chicken embryo and cell cultures. 4. To perform the different serological tests used to quantitate antibodies against several avian viruses. 5. To manipulate laboratory equipment. 6. To prepare and standardize antigens used in different serologic tests. 7. To understand the basic principles of biotechnology in avian medicine.
