Color photography investigates color theory, lighting, utilizing color for conceptual concerns, digital printing, and workflows. Concepts are presented within the context of contemporary trends and practices.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to introduce the students to both the technical and conceptual use of color photography. Through technical exercises in shooting color images working in both a darkroom and digital workflow, students will learn the techniques of working with color materials, including color theory, color temperature, lighting, and color printing. Classroom discussions, slide lectures, gallery visits, research projects and critiques will expose the students to the conceptual components and contemporary trends in color photography. Students will be required to engage assignment topics and present their work in the context of historical and contemporary practices within the medium. In presenting his/her photographs each student will be expected to assimilate and analyze the topic of the assignment and present the work orally as well as through various modes and media, including the use of appropriate technology. Students will be expected to engage other students' work with dialogue that is stylistically appropriate and mature. During critiques students will learn to communicate for academic and professional contexts, supporting a consistent purpose and point of view while considering and engaging opposing points of view. Students will be required to interpret inferences within each photograph being discussed, developing subtleties of symbolic and indirect discourse.


Topical Outline

Color theory, color temperature, and lighting lectures. Color films: lighting and shooting exercises. Color darkroom and digital work in color balancing and printing. Regular in-class assisted lab work time. Slide lectures, gallery visits, and conceptual reading/writing on historical and contemporary trends in color photography. Portfolio development with regular critiques.
