Course Objectives
This course is designed to acquaint students with the basic techniques of lithographic printmaking. A variety of assignments will be given throughout the semester to expand not only technical proclivity, but also challenge students to broaden their concepts through the use of printmaking. Each assignment will be graded on a 100-point rubric assessing achievement in design/concept, technical printing skills, participation, and timely print activity. Assessment of overall accomplishments is also formulated during intense discussions at studio critiques occurring regularly throughout the semester. Students will leave the course well-versed in a variety of processes utilized in lithography, including stone and plate processes. Historical and contemporary prints will be presented to give students a comprehensive understanding in the use of print media in art history and contemporary practice.
Topical Outline
This course will address the different technical approaches in lithographic printmaking. Assignments will be given which explore these techniques as well as emphasize concepts and ideas within the imagery. Students will work with stone and plate lithography to explore the possibilities within the medium. Trips to the Georgia Museum of Art Print Room and Hargrett Rare Book Room are integrated into the syllabus to provide students the opportunity to view contemporary and historical prints.
