Advanced Workshop in Photography and Expanded Media


Course Description

Advanced studio applications of lens, time-based, and expanded media practices. Students will develop intensive, individualized research practices within a conceptual framework. Regular critiques will support portfolio development.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
The studio work of those enrolled at the graduate level will require more extensive research and practice resulting in portfolios that are larger, the craft that is more refined, and concepts that are more fully realized. Graduate students will be required to engage in additional research components, presenting written papers and/or oral presentations on historical movements and contemporary practices.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will be exposed to in-depth applications of lens-based, timed-based, and hybrid media.
  • Students will synthesize advanced research and art practices emphasizing independent projects, working to develop the creation of a body of work.
  • Students will learn to effectively communicate ideas through images, hybrid work that engages technology, installation, and written statements, applying the use of appropriate choices in media, technology, and installation within their practice.
  • Classroom discussions, slide lectures, gallery visits, research projects, and critiques will expose students to the conceptual components and contemporary trends in contemporary lens and time-based art.
  • In presenting their work, each student will be expected to present the work orally as well as through various modes, including written statements about their work. These statements will contextualize their work within contemporary art practices, producing writing that is stylistically appropriate and mature, adapting that writing to specific circumstances and audiences in both academic and professional contexts.
  • Students will learn to engage other students' work with dialogue that is stylistically appropriate and mature, learning to communicate in academic and professional contexts, supporting a consistent purpose and point of view while considering and engaging opposing points.
