Advanced Print Studio


Course Description

Advanced lithography, etching, screenprinting, relief, or monoprints stressing aesthetic development and technical achievement.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will conduct primary source research, writing a paper on their work, and make an oral presentation to the class. Each graduate student will also lead a related class discussion utilizing a relevant article, video, or book relevant to contemporary print practice.

Course Objectives

Students in this course will build upon techniques learned in Introductory Printmaking courses and be encouraged to explore a variety of studio strategies. Graduate students will work to expand a body of work in a variety of media. All students will submit proposals detailing their goals for the semester both in terms of techniques and concept. Students will leave the class with a cohesive body of work. Assessment of overall accomplishments is also formulated during intense discussions at studio critiques occurring regularly throughout the semester. Historical and contemporary prints will be presented to give students a comprehensive understanding in the use of print media in art history and contemporary practice. Discussions will revolve around the evolution of contemporary print media encompassing traditional processes as well as installation, sculpture, mixed media, and video.


Topical Outline

This course will explore more advanced techniques in relief, lithography, screen printing, and intaglio printmaking. Equally important, individual ideas and concepts will be stressed and discussed in class. Students will be encouraged to explore experimental methods and mixed media techniques. Students will work on individual projects by submitting a conceptual proposal at the beginning of the semester as well as specific assignments. Trips to the Georgia Museum of Art Print Room and Hargrett Rare Book Room are integrated into the syllabus to provide students the opportunity to view contemporary and historical prints and books.
