Course Objectives
This course is a continuation of the development of the thinking and expertise acquired in ARST 3420. More diverse problem solving is emphasized. Skill acquisition is enhanced. Various approaches to stone carving and working are emphasized. Assessment of overall accomplishments is formulated during intense discussion at studio critiques occurring regularly throughout the semester. Students and instructor interact as a group during these critiques.
Topical Outline
Three or more sculptures are required in this level. Students should: continue to be aware of the various hardnesses of stone, continue to be aware of the reaction of various stones to the blow of a hammer and chisel, continue to understand the appropriate and safe use of power tools, continue to develop an appreciation of the work and dedication necessary to carve stone, continue to develop an understanding of the carving process, its aesthetics, and how to utilize this method in the creation of art.
