Course Objectives
This course continues development in modeling the human in clay or other plastic material which involves working directly from the nude human figure. Structure and anatomy are stressed with recognition of personal expression. Sensitivity toward the properties of the modeling medium, proportion, textural spontaneity, casting requirements, and composition are encouraged. This class requires dedication and hard work both in and out of the formal class time. Video, photography, drawing and a variety of approaches will be used in this course. Additionally, students are directed to the library for reserved and other readings and research sources. Assessment of overall accomplishments is formulated during intense discussion at studio critiques occurring regularly throughout the semester. Students and instructor interact as a group during these critiques.
Topical Outline
Students should: become more aware of the complexity of the human form as a subject for sculpture, be introduced to the anatomy and expand structural knowledge of the body, become familiar with various modeling material, techniques, and tools, develop visual acuity required to create representational portraiture and figures from the life model.
