Student learning Outcomes
- Through this hands-on course, students will develop an understanding of a variety of casting and foundry techniques.
- Students will develop and enhance skills in contemporary and historical casting and mold making techniques in a range of materials such as aluminum, bronze, and non-metals like silicone and plaster.
- Students will develop techniques affecting the final surface of cast sculptures including chasing, patination, and other finishing considerations.
- Students will developing sculptural working methods using the approach of substitution or replacement of a harder material for a softer or less permanent one, usually wax.
- Students will engage in intense discussion at studio critiques occurring regularly throughout the semester, developing verbal language skills and self-assessment tools.
Topical Outline
- Casting Tools and Techniques - Students will complete four to six pieces, starting small and progressing to larger sizes as skill of handling every step of the process increases
- Pattern Making Techniques - Understanding various gating and spruing techniques
- Materials - Exploring fluidity of various materials and moldable materials when they are in a liquid state
- Concepts and Expression - Continuing to develop an aesthetic and conceptual understanding of the implications of using casting as a mode of art creation
