Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will develop an understanding of various approaches to creating sculpture through carving.
  • Students will develop skills in various techniques including the use of hand tools, drills, and saws for removing extraneous material in the progress of carving. As students advance, pneumatic tools may be used.
  • Students will develop ideas and expand conceptual expression applying the techniques of carving.
  • Students will develop language to engage the concepts and techniques of carving through intense discussion at studio critiques occurring regularly throughout the semester.

Topical Outline

  • Carving tools and techniques: Students work at the beginning with small carvings and progress to larger, more ambitious sculpture. Usually, two to three art works are completed.
  • Understanding materials: Understanding the various hardness of material, becoming aware of the reaction of various materials to the blow of a hammer and chisel, and the appropriate and safe use of power tools.
  • Ideation: Various methods of idea generation include drawings and models. Developing an appreciation of the work and dedication necessary to carve materials, develop an understanding of the carving process, its aesthetics, and how to utilize this method in the creation of art.
