Course Description
Development, prevention, and intervention approaches for social, emotional, and behavioral problems that occur with children and adolescents, with particular attention to the school context.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will a) complete modified exams that include
additional, integrative essay questions, and b)research and
write
a paper on the etiology and recommended school-based treatments
for one of the at-risk behaviors/disorders covered in the
course.

Course Objectives
Students will: --become familiar with key concepts related to prevention and intervention with youth; --examine the literature on risk and resilience in youth and understand how it applies to intervention work with youth in schools; --analyze educational contexts in terms of student and teacher characteristics and the impact of major reforms on student risk, resilience and potential interventions; --understand the development of common social, emotional, and behavioral problems, such as school unreadiness, premature sexual behavior, substance abuse, dropping out, antisocial behavior, school violence and youth suicide; --learn and apply effective intervention strategies for common social, emotional, and behavioral problems, such as school unreadiness, premature sexual behavior, substance abuse, dropping out, antisocial behavior, school violence and youth suicide.
