Course Objectives
Students completing this course should be well versed in the current understanding of cell signaling, including appreciation of the current literature. The student will also acquire the skills to: - read and comprehend detailed and sophisticated scientific concepts as reported in the literature - to formulate alternate hypothesis to that stated in the literature - to critically appraise the scientific literature - design experiments relating to the subject material
Topical Outline
This course will be a combination of lectures, student presentations, discussions, and critical analysis and assessment of journal articles. The course will focus on stem cell biology, control of cell morphogenesis, and differentiation, and molecular pathways of intracellular cell signaling. Stem cell biology: embryonic stem cells, self-renewal, lineage specific differentiation decisions, cancer stem cells, trans- differentiation, de-differentiation, adult stem cell Cell signaling: Wnt, hedgehog, MAPK, P13K and relaying of signals to the nucleus, cross talk between signaling pathways, signal transduction in cancer and development, cell death pathways, cell migration, cell-cell communication, receptors, neurotransmitters, cytokines, growth factors.
