Course Description
Wide reading from all genres of children's literature and criteria for selection and response. Students examine how literature can be used to facilitate reading, writing, speaking, and listening in content areas (e.g., social studies, science). Students are introduced to theory and research in language acquisition, development, and linguistic variation.

1. Students will read widely from literature written and published for children in grades Pre-K - 5 including culturally diverse literature for these grades. 2. Students will explore theory of response to literature and practices for supporting response. 3. Students will explore topics and issues related to first and second language acquisition and dialect

1. Read and gain familiarity with a wide variety of children's literature 2. Understand the multiple ways children's literature can support both the curriculum and personal reading 3. Become familiar with criteria and resources for selecting children's literature for the elementary classroom 4. Explore linguistic and cultural diversity in the classroom 5. Gain an understanding of ourselves as readers 6. Respond to and discuss children's literature, the use of children's literature in classroom, and related issues 7. Participate in a community of readers through face-to-face and virtual means
