Course Objectives

1. Demonstrate the application of current research and successful practices concerning supervision, mentoring and induction. 2. Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the supervision and support of student teachers, interns, and other professional laboratory participants, beginning teachers, and other teachers needing support. 3. Define the role of science supervisor and mentor in terms of (a)teacher support, (b) teacher induction, (c) curriculum development and utilization, and (d) professional development. 4. Plan and conduct a clinical supervision cycle to help a teacher improve a specific teaching competency. 5. Apply the theories and research pertaining to reflective teaching, mentoring, peer coaching, induction, observation and feedback techniques, evaluation techniques and instruments, and conferencing. 6. Describe the activities of the science supervisor and mentor related to (a) assuring adequate and safe instructional facilities, (b) securing extramural funding, (c) communicating with the public and state agencies about science teaching and learning, and (d) evaluating teacher performance.
