Conceptual methods of visual thinking found in New Media, focusing on time-based media, performance, installation, and computer generated imaging. This course encourages the thoughtful engagement in complex ideas through visual application, not limited to any single configuration or vocabulary of art.

Course Objectives
Introduction into the process of making art from a conceptual idea. Learning out come: Understanding the difference between the media as the message vs. the idea as the message. Experience different methods of expression such as performance, video, installation and computer generated imaging. Learning out come: Developing an indifference to media while understanding the poetic and informative properties of expression. The utilization of new media technologies in artistic presentations. Learning out come: Students will learn how to think fluidly with technology as part of their poetic vocabulary. Students will learn basic electronics skills to utilize with creative multi media applications. Students will be exposed to a multitude of software applications in the service of artistic expression. Learning out come: Students will learn how to apply and utilize the proper technology for the proper purpose.
Topical Outline
The class will evolve from learners to practitioners. The course will begin with basic history and provide the foundation for poetic experimentation in time-based media. Projects will be given that require the students to enter into unfamiliar territories of expression. Through practice the students will become familiar with new forms of expression, they will loose their fear of exploring new media and eventually develop a freedom of expression not bound by the media. The student will acquire important and necessary vernacular for contemporary art making.
