CAD and Fabrication

Course Description

Aspects of computer aided design and CNC fabricating. Utilization of state-of-the-art fabrication facilities: haptic sensible technology, 3D stereo thermojet lithographic printing, and our 3-axis CNC router.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
According to personal research, initial projects will be determined by the graduate students themselves. Individual directed study meetings will occur once a week to maintain and monitor the development of their projects. The final project will be evaluated on conceptual development, production solutions, and methods of design. Graduate students will be expected to document their process and conclusion of each project for a final portfolio.

Semester Course Offered

Offered fall and spring

Grading System

A - F (Traditional)

Course Objectives

This course is designed to introduce students in the latest technologies in 3D fabrication and to expand their vocabulary in art making media. Software CAD applications will be taught ot aid the student in virtual designing. This will allow the students to problem solve their designs virtually before the process of fabrication. Students will learn the assets and efficiency of planning a work of art before building it. This methodology exercises the student's ability to think conceptually about the art they make.

Topical Outline

As an introduction to the potential of this process, the course will begin with video and slide presentations of various artists and product design firms that utilize this technology. The students will be introduced through demonstrations to the technology that the art school provides. The students will then begin planning their work through drawings. After the drawings are complete the students will enter the computer lab to begin designing using CAD software. Upon completion of the designs an evaluation of the proper technology will be assessed. The students will then enter the fabrication studios to begin the process of actualizing their designs. The students will then have an exhibition of their designs.
