Course Description

Exploration of advanced skills and techniques in jewelry. Emphasis will be on research and concept development while enhancing technical and problem solving skills. Material studies and thematic explorations will drive the assignments. Discussions on historical and contemporary metalsmiths will advance skills in critical thinking.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will build upon previously developed coursework and skills to find a personal vision and individual style in a body of work.
  • While encouraging experimentation and referencing contemporary, traditional, and ethnic cultural values, students will develop technically and conceptually.
  • Students will build an understanding of the inherent properties and limitations of different materials and techniques and be able to use these as a design tool rather than simply a process.
  • Students will develop language for discussing work in the context of critique within the peer review process.

Topical Outline

  • Each semester, students will explore two or more aesthetically-oriented projects. Of these projects, at least one will be selected by the student, who, upon approval of the project, will be expected to research material for its support technically and/or aesthetically.
  • The student is expected to demonstrate a technical proficiency that supports the aesthetic nature of the project.

  • A timetable will be set for completion of projects and critiques.
  • Critiques will be used to engage in discussion and the critical thought process evolving around the projects during which students will present a body of information to support their research and the content of the work.
  • Constructive criticism and opposing points of view are encouraged in analyzing the work.
