Course Objectives
This elective course is available to graduate students in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and other graduate programs who wish to pursue training in specialized areas of biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Depending upon the topic and the instructor, the course may consist of advanced reading of current literature accompanied by tutorial/discussion sessions with the instructor or of laboratory-based/computer-based training of specialized techniques, again under the supervision of an instructor. Students completing this course should have an understanding of the current status of a particular field or have developed proficiency in one or more specialized techniques such as protein crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and computational methods in biology, to mention but a few available from the faculty.
Topical Outline
This course is intended to provide a flexible entry into specialized areas of biochemistry and molecular biology in which a graduate student can choose an appropriate faculty member for one-on-one instruction and/or training in specialized areas or techniques. Variable credit of 1-5 hours is requested to provide flexibility to the student and instructor in deciding the amount of time appropriate for developing the information or laboratory-based/computer-based skills desired.
