Course Objectives
Students will learn structure and origin of various molecular biomarkers. Students will understand how these specific biomarkers can be applied to study biogeochemical cycling of organic carbon in the ocean and related interfaces, which include air-sea, land-sea, and water-sediments. Knowledge of chemical analysis and process study will be acquired through lectures, paper discussion, and homework. Students will be evaluated on their understanding of overall biogeochemical cycling and essential control processes.
Topical Outline
Lectures will cover the following topics: Organic function groups Reaction mechanisms Reaction kinetics Production of organic matter Water transport processes Alteration and degradation Sediment preservation Effects of oxygen Roles of animals and bacteria Various specific biomarkers Emphasis will be given to discuss biogeochemical processes affecting carbon cycling in marine systems. Applications of various biomarkers will be greatly addressed.
