Course Objectives
Students will understand the major philosophical, ideological, and historical ideas, values, and assumptions that have shaped the field of social welfare and the profession of social work. Students will demonstrate knowledge to the interrelated development of social policy and social services, the philosophy of social welfare, and the evolution of the social work profession in the United States, with particular attention paid to the social, economic, political, and cultural contexts in which they have developed. Students will develop an understanding of the distinctive character of social welfare and social work as it bears upon their particular interest in social work education and research.
