Course Objectives
Course Description & Objectives This independent study course is designed to provide a focused examination of current topics in the field of higher education. The objectives of the course include: 1) The facilitation of the development of useful research questions, 2) Systematic exposure to research literature bearing on questions of interest, 3) Identification of relevant theoretical frameworks that provide clearer understandings of the topic under examination, 4) Identification of potential research methods and designs that would enable the empirical examination of the topic. Working with a member if the Institute faculty, students will: 1) Provide a definition of a research question that will guide a semester-long inquiry, 2) Develop a review of the research literature relevant to the topic and research question(s), 3) Identify and apply appropriate theoretical frameworks to organize the literature review, 4) Specify next steps for further research on the topic. The above will be assembled in a report of activities and products for the semester.
