Dance Composition


Course Description

Introduction to dance composition emphasizing fundamental choreographic elements, structures, devices, and improvisation in developing an artistic stimulus into movement material. Students will engage in solo, duo, and collaborative small group studies and participate in class showings and peer feedback throughout the course. Students will also critically examine dance choreography through a variety of readings and video viewings to give context to their own creative work.

Course Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Compose dance studies utilizing fundamental choreographic elements and structures. 2. Apply improvisation and a variety of choreographic devices in developing an artistic stimulus into movement material. 3. Critically reflect on choreography created by self, peers, and professional artists. 4. Analyze the discourse of dance composition from multiple sources and perspectives and articulate an informed point of view.

Course units explore: 1. foundational choreographic elements (body, time, space, energy) 2. a variety of choreographic devices (motif manipulation, accumulation) 3. relationship between music and dance/music selection 4. breaking out of personal movement tendencies/habits, honoring dance lineages and inspirations 5. choreographic structures


Syllabus
