Pointe III and Variations


Course Description

Continued practice of pointe technique, which is an extension of ballet technique. Focus on building strength and confidence on pointe necessary to perform variations from the classical repertoire. Develop musicality, artistry, interpretation, and stylistic elements.

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to execute exercises on pointe in the center with sustained balances.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate skills in knowledge of ballet vocabulary.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to discuss content, context, and stylistic nuances of variations from the classical ballet repertoire learned in class.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to perform combinations and variations on pointe with correct technique.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to display strength and control when dancing on pointe.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to exhibit emerging skills in musicality, artistry, interpretation, and correct stylistic elements while performing variations.

Topical Outline

  • Execute barre exercises that develop strength on pointe and reinforce ballet technique skills
  • Perform center exercises on pointe, developing coordination, and movement quality
  • Review and practice classical ballet vocabulary applied in pointe work
  • Embody and discuss theory of pointe technique skills that extend from ballet technique in placement, musicality, and stylistic elements
  • Practice performance elements of musicality, artistry, interpretation, and stylistic elements
  • Investigate and discuss content, context, and stylistic elements of the choreography in variations from the classical ballet repertoire learned in class
  • Practice and perform variations with attention to sustained steps on pointe in correct placement with musicality, artistry, interpretation, and stylistic elements
