Course Description

Conceptual framework for interviewing, approaches associated with various disciplines and schools of inquiry, forms and structures interviewing takes, the criteria developed to assess interviews, and interviewing practice across a variety of situations. Recording, analyzing, and reporting interview data, ethical and relationship issues, and research on interviewing methods.

Course Objectives

As a learner in this course you will investigate methodological possibilities and various ways of dealing with procedural, philosophical, analytical and ethical issues related to undertaking qualitative interview projects. Specifically, you will: 1. Reflect on your own presuppositions and subjectivities in regard to the educational research processes. 2. Design several interview projects that include individual qualitative interviews (phenomenological, feminist, in-depth), focus group interviews, and an oral history approach. 3. Articulate your own theoretical framework and explain how it is informing your research design. 4. Analyze ethical dilemmas in qualitative interview research. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of issues related to differing participant populations (race, social class, gender, disabilities, sexual orientation, etc.) 6. Recognize, develop and demonstrate high quality interview skills across a range of approaches. 7. Understand the transcription process as theory and be able construct transcriptions of two examples of interview data. 8. Understand data analysis/interpretation procedures for making meaning of interview data.
