Pointe IV and Variations


Course Description

Further practice of pointe technique, which is an extensions of ballet technique. Maintain strength and refine skills in performance of class exercises and variations from classical and contemporary ballet repertoire. Focus on performance qualities of artistry, interpretation, theatricality, stylistic elements, and musicality.

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to perform ballet technique barre exercises on pointe with correct placement.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to execute exercises on pointe in the center with sustained balances.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate confidence in knowledge of ballet vocabulary.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to knowledgeably discuss content, context, aesthetics and stylistic nuances of variations from the classical and contemporary ballet repertoire learned in class.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to perform combinations and variations on pointe with correct technique.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to display refined strength and control on pointe when dancing on pointe.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to perform variations with refined artistry, personal interpretation, theatricality, stylistic elements and musicality.

Topical Outline

  • Execute barre exercises that maintain strength on pointe and skills in ballet technique
  • Perform complex center exercises on pointe, developing coordination, movement quality, and sustained steps on pointe
  • Demonstrate proficiency in classical ballet vocabulary
  • Embody and discuss theory of pointe technique skills (that extend from ballet technique) in classical and contemporary ballet movement, musicality and stylistic elements
  • Practice performance elements of artistry, interpretation, theatricality, stylistic elements, and musicality
  • Investigate and discuss content, context and stylistic elements of the choreography in variations from the classical ballet repertoire learned in class
  • Practice and perform variations with refined skills, focusing on sustained steps on pointe with artistry, personal interpretation, theatricality stylistic elements, and musicality
