Issues in Dance Education and Pedagogy


Course Description

Survey of selected topics in dance education, emphasizing learning theories, history of dance in education, diversity and gender issues, scientific principles and theories related to the teaching of dance, including cognitive science and motor learning applications, and assessment. Includes 4-8 hours of community or K12 school field experience.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will complete all assignments assigned to undergraduates. In addition, they will have additional readings and assignments that demonstrate a graduate level of mastery of content. Students will also conduct a literature review from a selected area of focus within current issues in dance education. The final visionary statement paper requirements will be more extensive in regard to depth of investigation and length.

  • Students will differentiate between various types of learners in the dance classroom.
  • Students will identify a common language among genres from which to observe, analyze, and teach movement.
  • Students will apply foundational pedagogical knowledge in an applied teaching setting.
  • Students will analyze the role of diversity and inclusion in historical and current dance education contexts.
  • Students will apply practical and theoretical information from various critical perspectives to the building of their own informed teaching philosophy.
  • Students will synthesize theoretical and practical information in order to see themselves as teachers/professionals, rather than students.
