Studio IV: Design for Special Populations


Course Description

Development and presentation of a studio design project for people with varying special needs. Projection of documents of advanced complexity, application of specialized knowledge from prerequisite courses, and familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and guidelines.

Course Objectives

To gain experience in the design of interiors for people of varying abilities and special needs. To instill the philosophy that all interiors should be accessible or adaptable for use by all people throughout their life cycle. To build additional skills in design methodologies for interiors for special populations. To demonstrate proficiency in applying the specialized knowledge gained in prerequisite interior design classes by providing a solution to a studio problem based on the needs of special populations. To gain an understanding of building, life safety, fire, and accessibility codes, standards, and guidelines. To demonstrate skills in the graphic and verbal presentation of a studio problem for special populations.


Topical Outline

Presentation of project and discussion of client. Preliminary research and design methodology. a. Generation of project goals; design concepts. b. Generation of spatial relationships and design schematics. c. Expansion of design program. Production of design documents. a. Appropriate construction documents. b. Appropriate presentation materials. Production of construction documents. a. Schedules/specifications. b. Furniture/cabinetry working drawings. Presentation drawings (emphasis on sketches). Verbal presentation.
