Course Objectives
To examine standard building systems (e.g., acoustical, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning) encountered in the practice of interior design. To understand conceptual design premises, appropriate vocabulary, materials, and equipment of those building system. To understand how building systems interface in the built environment and their affect on design decisions. Special consideration for energy management and natural resource conservation. To demonstrate understanding of course concepts through examination and/or projects.
Topical Outline
Structural building systems (e.g., wood, steel, concrete) a. Materials, methods, and vocabulary. b. Structural engineering principles (e.g., span, load, bearing) Interior environmental building systems (e.g., acoustical, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning). a. Materials, methods, and vocabulary. b. Design principles employed when planning building systems. The building construction process a. Sequence of the building construction process. b. Interrelated characteristics of the above systems. Responsibility of the interior designer for building systems and the interrelationship of the discipline with allied professionals; Effect of building systems on users of interiors.
