Course Objectives

To understand the range of materials and finishes used to construct, finish, and furnish interior environments. To understand how materials and finishes are selected and specified. To understand how to incorporate selected materials and finishes into construction documents. To become aware of environmentally sensitive materials and finishes. To become aware of the physiological and psychological ramifications inherent through the development of material, finish and color presentation boards, renderings and schedules.


Topical Outline

The role of the interior designer in specifying materials and finishes. Range of materials and finishes used to construct, finish, and furnish interior environments, including those related to: a. building systems b. room surface treatments (hard and soft floor, wall, ceiling treatments) c. textiles (upholstery, drapery, carpet) d. furniture (upholstered and non-upholstered) Effects of materials and finishes on users of interiors. Design principles employed while selecting materials and finishes. Methods for developing and presenting selections to clients throughout the design process. Specifying materials and finishes a. interrelationship of the discipline with allied professionals b. building, life safety, fire and accessibility codes, standards and guidelines c. preparing quantity takeoffs, installation instructions, construction documents d. methods of procurement, including purchasing and bidding Oral and graphic presentation of design proposals.
