Course Description
Principal monuments and artists of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in Italy emphasizing figures such as Giotto, Duccio, Simone Martini, and Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be expected to produce an extensive
research paper on specific works or issues related to the field
and the methodologies appropriate to the topic under
consideration in the course. This paper will be a detailed,
in-depth consideration of the student's chosen theme requiring
not only a demonstration of advanced research skills (including
the ability to read and use material presented in foreign
languages), but also an articulation of the student's ability to
understand and manipulate the critical apparatus of art history
in connection with Late Gothic Art in Italy.

Course Objectives
This course traces the artistic developments in Italy, above all Tuscany, from the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries. Major figures to be considered include Duccio, Cimabue, Giotto, Giotto's followers, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti, Orcagna, late fourteenth-century painting in Florence. Students will be tested twice during the semester and submit a paper, the topic of which will be assigned by the instructor. Exams and paper will each constitute one-third of the final grade.
