Course Description

Supervised practical experience in a professional graphic design environment. This course is for graphic design majors only and requires prior arrangement and approval from the department.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will be exposed to a variety of design industry environments and types of creative positions.
  • Students will gain professional field experience within an established organization or company, mentored by an experienced design professional.
  • Students apply the technical and creative skills and academic theory developed within the classroom to client-based projects in a professional context.
  • Students develop an understanding of a professional workplace and develop on-the-job workplace skills, such as professional conduct, business logistics, working with clients and supervisors, and addressing unexpected problems in a timely manner.

Topical Outline

  • Students must arrange their internship independently, consulting with area faculty as needed.
  • Professional application of design technique and theory in a professional workplace.
  • Mentorship: The position must be mentored by an experienced design professional and should require a minimum of three hours of contact per week for each one credit hour enrolled for a period of 15 weeks: 1 credit hour = 1x3x15 = 45 hours of internship work 2 credit hours = 2x3x15 = 90 hours of internship work 3 credit hours = 3x3x15 = 135 hours of internship work
  • If the position is unpaid, it must meet the US Department of Labor guidelines for internship programs in order to receive academic credit.
  • Reflection: Students will document and report on the internship experience as specified by the assigned faculty. Upon completion of the internship, the internship mentor/supervisor will be responsible for submitting to the assigned faculty an evaluation of student performance in the position.
