Course focuses on engaged learning and applied graphic design through collaboration with community partners, clients, and stakeholders to address particular needs. Students will understand human-centered design, design research and strategy, prototyping, designing for specific contexts, and other aspects of design practice.
Students will learn to engage applied design projects that address particular challenges and authentic needs.
Students will develop proficiencies in the application of visual and conceptual graphic design principles and tools in executing design outcomes within given perimeters and in appropriate media.
Students will gain practical experience within a professional context through planning and managing projects.
Students will develop and demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills by working directly with clients, stakeholders, and within a design team, considering and responding to the diverse perspectives of various communities, clients, and audiences.

Topical Outline
Students engage with partners, clients, stakeholders, and classmates on real-world, comprehensive design projects that change each semester.
Class time consists of discussion, research, exploration and ideation, stakeholder meeting and presentation, feedback, prototyping, execution, and fabrication.
Employing design competencies and abilities in the design and execution of projects with and for specific stakeholders such as non-profit organizations, community organizations, and other clients that address particular challenges.
Appling effective visual communication and creative design principles and skills across various and relevant media to address authentic needs.
Managing projects: plan, organize, coordinate, and execute design projects on schedule and within scope, including final production and/or fabrication.
Working in direct collaboration with experts from other disciplines, stakeholders, and partners to professionally conduct preliminary research, interviews, and manage feedback.
Effective communication about design decisions and present design solutions both within the class context and in partner/client interactions.
Navigating various issues and dilemmas inherent to collaborative design projects.
Reflection - Upon project completion, reflect on process, methodologies, decision-making, and impact of designs outcomes.
Curate and prepare projects and related case studies for personal portfolios that will serve as tools for future career opportunities and further academic pursuits.
