Color Techniques in Scientific Illustration


Course Description

Development of skills, beginning through advanced, in color illustration using multiple techniques and for multiple audiences. An introduction into editorial, conceptual, and commercial design. Techniques include digital software Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, graphite, watercolor, and color pencil. Subjects will be chosen from the natural and medical sciences.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will develop skills in color illustration using multiple techniques and for many audiences.
  • Students will develop an understanding of editorial, conceptual, and commercial design using techniques and tools of a real-world market.
  • Students will develop a competency in the digital software Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator and will have the option of investigating Macromedia Director as an interactive software tool.
  • Students will enhance skills in the techniques of watercolor, gouache, and color pencil depicting various subjects in natural and medical science.
  • Students will develop skills in critical academic discussion at studio critiques occurring regularly throughout the semester.
