Course Objectives
This course builds on fundamental competencies developed in previous graphic design courses. Focus is on the understanding and creation of narrative structures in sequential and time- based visual communication design through exploration of related concepts, media, and tools. Upon completion of this course students will: — understand the role of narrative in various visual communication media — interpret the physical, conceptual, and contextual implications of type, image, and sound in time-based communication — apply additional approaches for arrangement of visual elements using basic rhetorical design principles and analysis — understand and use rational transitions in building motion graphics — develop competency with relevant digital tools and software used in the creation of time-based media and motion graphics
Topical Outline
Relevant topics will be introduced in conjunction with the completion of a series of visual explorations and problems that ask students to use both 2D and 4D media, concepts, and technologies: Topics: — Visual narrative structures, such as multiple and non-linear — Possibilities and limitations of the integration of text, image, motion, and sound in visual communication problem-solving — Concepts related to time, pacing, and transition — Rhetorical design principles (physicality, abstraction, and integration) and analysis (audience, purpose, and context) —Understanding and use of relevant software and tools in the creation of narrative motion design Problems and assignments will ask student to: — Articulate visual and verbal ideas by storyboarding — Explore methods, tools, and techniques used in time-based message building — Produce sequential designs in various media, such as print, animated shorts, and motion graphics — Explore the concepts related to effective visual transitions used in building motion graphics — Create linear, non-linear, and multiple narratives by translating the invisible into visual — Become proficient with relevant motion graphic and design software through development of time-based narrative communication projects
