Graphic Design Senior Capstone


Course Description

Focuses on the development of a comprehensive design and visual communication project. Students will engage in increased self- directed research, writing, and making that will include topical research, visual exploration, application of research, advanced execution, and may include sustained investigation of specific skills and techniques.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will hone skills in defining problems based on a broad, given topic and to think flexibly in producing visual solutions to the problem.
  • Students will learn to research and execute a cohesive final project while further developing skills and competencies in problem-solving.
  • Students will apply visual communication solutions across various media.
  • Students will learn to engage others in review of one’s work and general discussions of design.
  • Students will prepare for and promote a group exhibition or other shared capstone experience.
  • Students will learn to participate in the collaborative culture of the studio, including speaking and writing critically about your design and that of peers.
  • Students will develop skills to work more independently and in a self-directed manner in building much of the work for the portfolio that will help graduates enter creative practice. This includes being highly organized and developing a personalized project schedule to stay on track.

Topical Outline

  • Define a project within a given topic or prompt, choose the best format and media for a particular communication goal, organize and schedule time, and set and meet interim goals
  • Thorough research and problem-identification related to a broad topic or prompt
  • Delivery of a well-designed and thorough mid-term presentation explaining topic and problem
  • Development of a final capstone project, including completion of all intermediate assignments and meeting deadlines on all phases, including ideation, prototyping, execution, refinement, and production
  • Competently execute project components, making considerations for application across media to bridge physical and digital user experiences
  • Presentation of work in progress at all scheduled reviews and participation in discussion, critique, and in collaborative peer feedback
  • Generate content for and complete design of a thorough project process book documenting research, process, and outcomes
  • Completion of requirements for course capstone activity, such as group exhibition or review
